Bing and Sitemaps

October 3rd, 2009

Bing, the new MSN search tool, has offered information regarding how to create website sitemaps to be more efficient. Each search engine has their own designs for how you should set up your website for search engine optimisation. The top three search engines Bing, Google, and Yahoo have similar information. Yet, each have differences. For Bing when you create a sitemap you will want to use XML files that are designed to work with the search engine crawlers. By using the XML you can get the bots through your site easier.

With the sitemap you may also want to use a lowercase version in HTML. This also helps get the bots through your site. The structure of your sitemap is equally as important. Your sitemap structure needs to be easier for the bot to get through. In other words, if you structure your site so that there are no broken links and multi links from the sitemap the bots can travel through it more quickly. Be sure to use the format sitemap=www.yoururl.com/sitemap.xml to structure the sitemap. Bing offers a webmaster centre to ensure you have search engine optimisation regarding your sitemap. Also use a robots.txt to help the bots crawl your site easier.
